The team at Bloober Team, a Polish video game development studio renowned for its work on games like Silent Hill 2 Remake, Blair Witch, and The Medium, is bringing us a brand-new isometric open-world survival horror game based on the comic series I Hate This Place from Image Comics. The game is being developed by a newly-formed studio created by Bloober, named Broken Mirror Games.
Written by Kyle Starks, and illustrated by Artyom Topilin and Lee Loughridge , I Hate This Place tells the story of two women, Trudy and Gabby, who inherit a farm and hope to start a new chapter in their lives. Unfortunately, their dream is quickly disrupted as the farm is haunted by supernatural forces. If you haven’t yet read this series, I highly recommend picking up a trade. You can even preview the comic over on the Image Comics website.
The horror genre remains one of, if not the most popular genres across all forms of media. Personally, I’m always drawn to it — I just can’t get enough. This fascination is how I stumbled upon I Hate This Place while digging through dollar bins at my local comic shop. And just as a fun side note, some of the variant covers of this comic change the title from I Hate This Place to Fuck This Place—I love that touch.
Finding quality horror can be a challenge in today’s oversaturated market, and that includes comics. This issue has been around since the Silver Age of comics, with publishers like DC and EC pushing out titles such as Witching Hour, Vault of Horror, and Ghosts to capitalize on the growing popularity of horror stories. While that led to some great comics, it also resulted in an influx of shallow series that relied more on flashy covers than strong storytelling.
Fortunately, I Hate This Place isn’t one of those. The story doesn’t waste time—it immediately pulls you in without dragging things out for several issues to pad the page count. In a time when many comics offer only a few minutes of actual reading amidst filler, it’s refreshing to dive straight into a gripping narrative. The comic leaves plenty of mystery about why the supernatural forces are attacking or where the creatures came from, keeping the tension high and the stakes even higher.
The upcoming video game, however, won’t feature Trudy and Gabby as the protagonists. Instead, players will follow Elena, a new character who accidentally unleashes a supernatural evil into the world. She must battle through hordes of creatures to find safety before nightfall when all the bad stuff happens.
