Writer Geoff Johns and Artist Gary Frank team up to create an amazing universe in the irradiated wasteland of what used to be the United States. We go on a action-packed adventure with The Glowing Man (Tariq Gieger) and his two headed wolf Barney. You really couldn’t go wrong with picking up any issue of Geiger with its one-and-done storytelling, truly a breath of fresh air as a reader. The writing style and art, really make for a beautiful book that is an accessible read for the uninitiated and great for teenagers and up!
With the U.S. in shambles, multiple forces come fighting for control, and Geiger, being the key to that power, factions once on terms start to seek him out on there own. A checkered past and looking for a cure for his powers, Geiger begrudgingly forms a very uncanny group: an irradiated wolf, Barney; Nate the knight and his steed, ZigZag. In the year of the on going series being out, its been a badass romp through the wasteland in search of this of a rumored “cure” for Geiger’s power.
Nate the Knight? like a Knight-Knight? Yes, he split from the Camelot Casino faction that is ruled a by King and Queen from issue 8. Nate, being a honest-to-good person, helps Geiger keep on track; him being more of a simple character helps us understand Geiger. Through some of his simple mistakes, we’ve learned about Geiger’s love for books and their importance, but it also puts Geiger in his first fight of the series with irradiated wasteland mutants that use the limbs and organs of un-irradiated people. With that also came in a real challenge for Geiger: The Electrician, I gave out good laugh too, but it was a really somber moment with Barney almost being killed by him.
With the gang all back together and rapidly approaching their destination for the cure for Geiger, a couple of familiar faces also come into the series: Junkyard Joe and Redcoat ( Simon Pure). Geiger, having a soft spot for kids being a father himself, sees kids being attacked by a group of nightcrawlers a mutated spider-like creature. In saving the kids, they discover their home is seemingly untouched from the nuclear war; with some strict rules for the community, Geiger seeks to leave them without disruption. But, the King of Camelot Casino has other plans! With Geiger’s explosive nature he puts the group and community in danger, seemingly losing his cool, even striking Nate! With Barney being the only one to bring him back something is truly going awry with Geiger.
Lewistown, Montana-the finale stop in the search for the cure for Mr. Geiger from a former Glowing Man, but that man is a woman, Ashley Arden. But is really she friend of foe? With Tariq and Ashley having the same suit, they both have had to crossed paths with Dr. Molotov, a former nuclear scientist. Geiger, wondering what happened to Molotov, Ashley tells him of a cult that was around before the war happened and that he was taken an killed-or is that all that happened? There being no real full cure for Geiger’s powers, only that he himself needs to find peace to control it before it consumes him and everyone around!
Now that was a very, very, very brief summary of this years with the current run of Geiger, I left of A LOT of details in hopes that if it piqued your interest, you would pick up the series and give it a read for yourself. It has every format for previous issues, from hardcover collected editions, trade paperbacks, or the classic single-issue comics (my favorite format), all with having amazing cover and interior art by Gary Frank. With the price of a lot of modern comics being $4.99 or HIGHER, Ghost Machine having their whole line of books just being at $3.99, you’re are getting so much for that price. Want to the the books a little look? Preview some interiors here!
I love the writing style that the wonderful people at Ghost Machine are doing. There is no need to have read all the previous volumes, but specific character peaks your interest I would highly recommend to give them a read. Redcoat, being a current run of books with Simon being a Deadpool-esque character and the setting being history fiction book, makes for a fun read! Junkyard Joe being a super-soldier program gone wrong, also dealing with the trauma of war and what it means to be human. Geiger, being my personal favorite of the Ghost Machine books, is that its ACTUALLY entertaining, and I look forward to reading it every month. Read more comics!
